The Two Clocks We Carry

Why Qigong Teaches Us More Than Time Management

There is a clock hanging on the wall in my home.

Like everyone else, I use it to organize my day. It reminds me of appointments, when to prepare meals, when to create Pinterest Pins, and even when it’s time to practice Qigong.

That clock is useful.

It helps me live in the world.

But over the years, my Qigong practice has introduced me to another clock.

One that doesn’t hang on a wall.

One that quietly lives within each of us.

One measures minutes.

The other measures awareness.

The Clock on the Wall

The first clock keeps life moving.

Without it, we would miss appointments, forget birthdays, and struggle to meet our responsibilities.

There is nothing wrong with this clock.

In fact, it serves an important purpose.

The Tao isn’t about rejecting everyday life.

It’s about living it with greater awareness.

The Clock Within

When I stand in Wuji or practice Zhan Zhuang, something interesting happens.

After a while, I stop wondering how much time has passed.

Instead, I begin noticing something else.

My breathing becomes quieter.

My shoulders soften.

The birds seem louder.

The breeze becomes easier to feel.

The forest doesn’t change.

My awareness does.

It is as if another clock has begun keeping time.

Not by seconds…

But by presence.

We Carry Both

For many years I believed time was something I needed to manage.

Now I see it differently.

I still respect the clock on the wall.

But I also listen to the quieter clock within.

One reminds me where I need to be.

The other reminds me that I am already here.

Both matter.

The challenge is remembering which one needs my attention in this moment.

The Little Things Matter… In That Moment

Not long ago, during a conversation with a friend, I found myself saying,

“The little things matter.”

As we continued talking, another thought quietly appeared.

The little things matter… because they are the moment.

Life rarely changes through one dramatic event.

It changes through ordinary moments that often go unnoticed.

A slow breath.

A smile.

Standing quietly for five minutes.

Listening instead of rushing.

Making a cup of tea.

Watching the morning light filter through the trees.

These moments don’t seem extraordinary.

Until one day you realize…

They became your life.

A Simple Practice

Today, take just one minute.

Before looking at your phone…

Before checking your email…

Simply stand.

Feel your feet on the ground.

Notice one complete breath.

Don’t try to change anything.

Just notice.

For one minute, let the inner clock be the only one that matters.

You may discover that time feels very different.

Final Thoughts

The clock on the wall will always have something to tell us.

So will the calendar.

So will the responsibilities of everyday life.

But there is another clock that never asks us to hurry.

It simply invites us to become present.

Qigong has taught me that both clocks have their place.

One helps us arrive on time.

The other reminds us that life is happening now.

And perhaps that is why…

The little things matter.

Because they are the moments from which a peaceful life is quietly built.

🌿 Return to the moment. This is how Qi is cultivated.
